Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental treatment that may be suitable for some patients following an assessment, and is intended to help manage the appearance of tooth colour where appropriate. Treatment outcomes vary between individuals.
We offer in-chair whitening using Philips Zoom as well as take-home whitening systems from SDI Pola, both of which may be considered depending on suitability. During a consultation, we can also discuss factors that may contribute to changes in tooth colour and provide guidance on oral hygiene and maintenance as part of ongoing dental care.

Types of teeth whitening
There are two primary types of teeth whitening methods. The choice between them depends on individual preferences, the degree of discoloration, and the speed at which results are desired — consulting with a dentist can help determine the most suitable approach.
In-office teeth whitening — Philips Zoom
Performed by a dental professional in a clinic, typically involving a higher concentration of whitening agents over one or more sessions — offering fast and noticeable improvements in a short time. Our team will apply whitening gel to your teeth (a strength only accessible by your dentist), activated by our Zoom LED light placed over your teeth for a few sessions while you watch a movie or listen to music. Before beginning, we conduct a dental examination to identify any oral issues; a rubber shield protects your gums from the bleaching gel, and based on the level of discolouration we may apply the gel multiple times.
At-home teeth whitening kits
Our dentists will have you fitted for take-home whitening mouth trays — impressions or scans are taken of your upper and lower teeth for custom trays, included in the kit with your whitening gel. The custom-fitting mouth trays are yours to keep, and more gel can be provided whenever you run low. Apply the bleaching gel into the trays and keep them fixed for around 30 to 45 minutes (our dentists will advise the exact time period), repeating daily until you get the right results. The choice for people who prefer slow, steady whitening in the comfort of their own home — and a good choice for affordable teeth whitening.

Dental evaluation
Before starting whitening, our dental professional evaluates your oral health to ensure you are a suitable candidate. Any existing dental issues, like cavities or gum disease, may need to be addressed first. A New Patient Exam and Hygiene visit is your recommended starting point.

The dentist may assess the current shade of your teeth and discuss your desired level of whitening to set realistic expectations.

Preparation
Protective measures are taken to shield the gums and lips from contact with the whitening agent, preventing potential irritation.

Application of whitening agent
The whitening gel is applied to the tooth surface, activated in sessions as required.

Rinsing & assessment
The dentist assesses the achieved shade and discusses any further sessions or at-home maintenance if necessary.

After the procedure, it’s advisable to avoid staining substances like coffee, tea, and tobacco for some time to maintain the results.

Cosmetic consultations
It is always ideal that you maintain the health of your gums and teeth prior to whitening them. There may be underlying problems that may affect the results of our whitening treatment, or cause more damage to your existing gums and teeth. We advise that you either come in for your Check up & Clean appointment first OR book in for a cosmetic consultation where we will guide you through your options prior to starting any treatment.
Tips to ensure long-lasting whitening results
Stop the use of tobacco products and quit smoking. Minimise consumption of tea, coffee, and other teeth-staining foods and drinks. Try to brush after every meal — especially meals containing staining foods. Rinse your mouth and drink plenty of water. Reduce sugary foods and choose a diet with plenty of calcium to prevent discolouration due to enamel erosion. Make regular dental visits and get professional dental cleaning at regular intervals.

How do we use the Take Home Kits?+
Take Home Whitening Kits are customised to fit your existing teeth. The whitening solution provided is meant to sit in your tray for a period of time. The amount of time spent whitening at home will depend on the whitening gel that we provide to you, based on your own individual dental circumstances. We advise the take home whitening kits be used for a minimum of 2 weeks to see the optimal results.
How long does my whitening treatment last for?+
Everyone’s dental situation is different. Having red wine, drinking coffee and certain habits like smoking all contribute to how long your whitening lasts. Having a Take Home Whitening kit allows you to maintain your teeth with ongoing whitening sessions at home.
Does whitening damage teeth?+
This is a very common question. Teeth are made of a very strong enamel layer. However, sensitivity is a very common side effect of whitening, and can be managed with certain products that we will recommend.
What causes our teeth to become yellow?+
There are a number of reasons why your teeth become dull and lose their brightness. Certain foods can stain your enamel, which is the outer layer of our teeth. Additionally, irregular visits to your dentist can cause plaque and calculus to build up around your teeth causing them to stain yellow. Getting your teeth cleaned professionally at regular intervals can reduce this build up.

Can I whiten if I have sensitive teeth or gums?+
Whitening teeth with sensitivity or gum issues should be done under a dentist’s guidance. They can recommend gentle options, desensitising agents, or at-home kits with lower whitening concentrations. Addressing underlying issues and following preventive measures are essential.
